Intaglio printmaking. Plate (left) and print (right) as produced in the intaglio method of printmaking. The image was incised in the metal plate. Ink was placed on the plate to fill the incised areas, and paper was then pressed onto the surface to produce the printed image. This plate is for a French commemorative stamp for French Romantic painter and draughtsman Pierre-Paul Prud'hon (1758-1823). This stamp was issued in 1995. It shows a study (preparatory drawing) for the artwork 'The Dream of Happiness'.
