Postage stamp featuring Adolf Hitler (1889-1945), 1941-1942. Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany in 1933 and became Führer in 1934. He pursued an aggressive foreign policy and the German invasion of Poland in 1939 triggered World War II. As a German defeat became inevitable, Hitler retreated to his underground bunker in Berlin where, on 30 April 1945, he committed suicide.
