A recent personal note in thesecolumns directed attention to the elec-tion of two engineer-executives to vice-presidencies in the American ElectricRailway Association. A similar coin-cidence occurred when H. W. Clapp waspromoted to be general manager of the. H. W. CLAPP Columbus Railway, Power & LightCompany, and W. C. Campbell was pro-moted to the general superintendencypreviously occupied by Mr. Clapp. Bothof these men are electrical engineersby profession, the larger part of theirbusiness careers having been spent inengineering work. Mr. Clapp is an American citizenby birth although he was born in Aus-tralia. He came by his interest in elec-tric railway matters naturally becausehis father was managing director of theMelbourne Tramway & Omnibus Com-pany. For four years before coming Mr. Clapp was superintendentof motive power of the BrisbaneTramways. With the operating experi-ence thus gained, he entered the man-ufacturing field in 1902 as an engineerwith the General Electric Company, hiswork being in the New York five and one-half years spentthus he had much to do with the elec-trification of the New York CentralRailroad, with the rolling stock for theInterborough Rapid Transit C
