Nautilus submarine in the Arctic, near ice floes during its expedition of 1931. Originally commissioned in the US Navy as USS O-12, this submarine was renamed Nautilus for the Arctic expedition led by George Hubert Wilkins (1888-1958). This O-class submarine was 53 metres in length, commanded by Captain Sloan Danenhower with a crew of 20 men. The expedition departed from the UK on 5 August. On 31 August, the Nautilus briefly dived under the polar ice cap, but was damaged and the expedition was aborted. Following its return, the submarine was scuttled in a Norwegian fjord. The scientific experiments conducted were a success.
