We entered the Indus valley onthe morning of May 3rd, after anhours march from meeting of the rivers takesplace at the bottom of a precipitousgorge, where the path has to cross a spur of granite 1,000 feet above thelevel of the rivers. Beyond this spur it descends to the bank of theIndus, which it follows for a short distance. Then it is again forcedto climb a high ridge of sedimentary deposit, from the top of whicha precipitous way leads to Tarkutta, a village built on an alluvial terracesome 300 feet above the stream. We passed through the whole village, which is shaded with walnut and apricot trees, and set up our camp atthe foot of the oasis, near a wide beach of very fine dove-coloured sandon the bank of the Indus. It was so hot that we were tempted to bathe, and to our great surprise found the water icy Confluence of the Dras with the Indus . idl ilJiv/ aiiiU uri)
