Uses and Functions of the Forceps.— The main functionof the forceps is that of a tractor, which is by far the most im-portant. Another function sometimes to be remembered is thatof a rotator, as, for example, when a straight forceps is applied tothe head in face presentation, with the idea of twisting the chinforward. In a difficult forceps operation the instrument some-times has the function of a lever; the operator, swaying his armsa little from side to side, pulls down
