Sonoran Desert Museum - Southwestern Coral Bean

Here is an Arizona riddle for you — when is a museum not a museum? When it is a zoo. That is the mystique of the Sonoran Desert Museum in Tucson. It is, in fact, a zoo featuring the plants and animals from the Sonoran Desert — that part of our country encompassing the Valley of the Sun (Phoenix area) and south into Mexico. One of the amazing observations about nature is that even though the Sonoran Desert is fairly drab with only a bit of green against a tan palette, there are a few exceptions. Here is a Southwestern Coral Bean with long tubular flowers that glow a brilliant red. Hummingbirds love them. All parts of this plant are poisonous, but the red beans are by far the most highly toxic. Beware!
