Researcher at the computer controls of the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) ring at the CERN research centre, Geneva. The SPS is housed in a long circular tunnel and took six years to build. In 1981 the SPS was modified to allow it to operate as a proton/antiproton collider ring, at collision energies up to 900 GeV (Giga electronvolts). This led to the discovery of the W and Z particles that carry the electroweak nuclear force in 1983 and the top quark in 1984.
