Furniture and west wall Festival Gallery Radhus City Hall Oslo Norway
Overlooking the Oslo fjord bay on the waterfront the centrally located Oslo City Hall Radhus reflects the historic role of Oslo as the capital of a seafaring nation Although the plan to build the hall dates to 1915 construction was delayed until 1931 and not completed until 1950 the same year the city celebrated the 900th anniversary of its founding The twin towered design combines national romanticism classicism and functionalism and many of Norway s greatest artists painted huge murals in the large rooms depicting important events in Norwegian history culture and working life The murals depict life in Oslo during World War II and include illustrations of the Nazi occupation as well as Life by Edvard Munch Tapestries frescoes sculpture and woodcarvings also are on display and the exterior is richly decorated The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded here each December The building houses the city s administrative body and is the seat of the City Council Three tapestries adorn the walls of the Festival Gallery designed by Kare Mikkelsen Jonsborg and wpven by Else Halling They represent scenes from an 18th century Oslo marketplace
