Leisure pursuits. 15th-century manuscript illustration showing the playing of games (top) and the playing of musical instruments (bottom). The games being played are early forms of chess and handball, with the sloping roof part of the court. The musical instruments are forms of a lute, a woodwind instrument, and a harp. This illustration is from 'Les faits et les dis des romains et de autres gens' (1473-1480), a medieval French edition of the 1st-century Roman work 'Memorabilia' by Valerius Maximus. The artworks are by Maitre Francois. Named in the top panel are the Roman generals Scipio Africanus and Gaius Laelius (background) and Scaevola (right).
