Herbert Dingle (1890-1978), British astronomer. During his career Dingle held professorships at Imperial College and University College, London, and served as president of the Royal Astronomical Society between 1951 and 1953. He is renowned for claiming to have disproved Einstein's theory of special relativity by highlighting its logical implausibility. He based his argument upon the twin paradox, where one clock moving at the speed of light relative to another will run more slowly. He said this was impossible, as both clocks would have to be running more slowly than the other. However, critics claimed his reasoning demonstrated a misunderstanding of Einstein's mathematics.
