I can well believe thatmy own choice may have been criticifed for exadly theoppofite reafon. There are doubtlefs few, if any, inthe audience I addrefs, who are not well acquaintedwith the principal works of Shakefpeare, who have notadmired their poetic beauties, felt their power andpathos, and reflefted on their moral fignificance. Andfo much has he been the theme of our whole criticalliterature—fo many gifted writers have taken him forthe text of their aeilhetic difquifitions—that juil fy Hema-tic views of his genius and dramatic art have becomemore or lefs familiar to all educated minds.
