A 1777 engraving showing the partially ruined St Michaels Castle (or the Vale Castle), Guernsey, Channel Island, UK. The 1000 year old castle was also known as Le Chateau St Michel, Chateau de Val and Chateau de Valle and was built to defend St Sampson’s harbour at the eastern end of the Braye du Valle, Guernsey, and Bordeaux Harbour. Troops have been barracked at the castle over many years including at the time of the American Civil War,the French Revolution,and the Napoleonic Wars. Hundreds of Russian soldiers stationed at Delancey died of disease and are buried within its walls.
