Ferrocene. Molecular model of the organometallic compound ferrocene (). This is a metallocene consisting of two cyclopentadienyl rings bound by a central iron atom. The discovery of this compound and its properties led to the synthesis of many similar molecules and an explosion of interest in organometallic chemistry. Atoms are represented as spheres and are colour-coded: carbon (grey), hydrogen (white) and iron (brown).
