The Edomites were in all ages hostile tothe Hebrews; hence, by a figure of speech, theenemies of the true Israel of God are designatedEdomites. 2. The Moabites. The land inhabited bythe descendants of the eldest son of Lot ison the east of Jordan and the Dead Sea; itshistory is very closely connected with the chil-dren of Israel. The people formed a powerfultribe, though too feeble to offer resistance to theprogress of the Hebrews when on their way toCanaan. They, however, succeeded, conjointly. It contains three chambers, one thirty-five feetsquare, and two twenty-five feet square. Its sheltered position has preserved the elegantcarving from destruction by the weather. The Arabs call this temple the treasury ofPharoah. No one knows for what purpose this elaborate excavation was used.
