Anaesthetic apparatus, 1920. This is Shipway's apparatus, introduced by Sir Francis E. Shipway (1875-1968), a leading anaesthesia specialist. The apparatus delivered a continuous flow of anaesthetic vapour through a tube inserted into the patient's trachea (windpipe). The full apparatus includes ether and chloroform vaporisers held in warm water baths, connected to a vacuum flask that holds hot water. A hand pump was used to blow air through the ether and/or chloroform vaporisers, and through the vacuum flask to the patient. Shipway thought that the improved results using this technique was due to the use of warmed vapour, but this was later recognized as being the result of using a long endotracheal tube in the windpipe.
