It is composed of three arches, the centerspan 520 feet and the two side spans 502 feet each. Theroadway is 54 feet wide with a double line of street cartrack occupied by the St. Louis and East St. LouisElectric Railway, and below the roadway are two tracksupon which the steam roads enter the city. The foundations, both piers and abutments, rest onsolid rock, work having in some instances been doneat a depth of no feet. The frame work or supportingmembers of the arches are steel tubes 18 inches indiameter and were erected without the use of false bridge was begun in March, 1868, and it wasopened for traffic July 4, 1874. The total cost, includingapproaches, was six and a half millons of dollars. The water is taken from a tower built on a rockbottom, 1,600 feet from the shore, and passes to thepumping station through tunnels. The maximumcapacity of the pumping station is 116,000,000 g
