It is true, that the minds of the spectatorsof this interesting sight were well prepared toreceive this impression; but it is also certainthat sueh a facilitv of belief had been occa- sioned by the simplicity and truth of narrati\e, every part of which hadbeen conlirmed by the investigation so tar asit had advanced, and it will not be denied thatthe shape of the face, the forehead, an eye, andthe beard, are the most important features bywhich resemblance is Drawing made of the head of Charles thi: Fiust, whenexhumed in i8i 3. When the head had been entirely disengagedfrom the attachments which confined it, it wasfound to be loose, and, without any difiicultywas taken up and held to \iew. It was quitewet, and gave a greenish red tinge to paper andto linen which touched it. The back part ofthe scalp was entirely perfect, and had a remark-ably fresh appearance; the pores of the skinbeing more distinct, as they usually are whensoaked in moisture; and the tendons and liga-ments of the neck were of considerable substanceand firmness. The hair was thick at the backpart of the head, and, in appearance, nearly 198 Annals nf Medical History black. A portion of it, which has since beencleaned and dried, is of a beautiful dark browncolour. That of the beard was a redder the back part of the head it was more thanan inch in length, and had probably been cut soshort for the convenience of the executioner,or perhaps
