American professional surfer Kelly Slater entering the water for his semi final heat against Australian Mick Fanning at the 2015 J-Bay Open surfing event in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa. Fanning was a finalist in the event along with fellow Australian Julian Wilson. Only minutes into the final Fanning had a close encounter (deemed an 'attack' by the media despite Fanning not being touched by the shark) with a great white shark, which led to the final being abandoned and both surfers being awarded second place.
