Lowell returned to the United States in1885, and lived a retired life with his only daughter,at Southboro, ]\Liss. He was not afterA^-ard engaged inpublic life, and was prevented by failing health fromdoing much literary A\ork. He died at Elmwood,August 12, 181)1.
