History of the Catholic church in Woonsocket and vicinity, from the celebration of the first mass in 1828, to the present time, with a condensed account of the early history of the church in the United States. n in congratulations for the ad-vancement of Rev, Father McCarthy, the sympathy of thepeople goes out to him on his removal from a parish wherehe was beloved and admired by all, to an entirely new field, where he will be obliged to begin work anew. CHAPTER XXI. TnK New Pastok—Kiev. Fathkk T. J. Loughhan Prkachks HisFiusT Skumon in Sacukd Hkart Chuuch—Pays a TributeTO Hev. Father McCarthy—Asks for the Prayers okHis People. Rev. Thomas J. Loughran succeeded Rev. FatherMcCarthy as pastor of the Sacred Heart Church. Hedelivered his introductory address on Sunday, Feb. 17,1901, at the 10:30 oclock Mass. His deliveiy of speechis forceful and impressive and he has the faculty of holdingthe strict attention of the congregation. His address wnsbrief but to the point and he at once won the good will ofhis parishioners. The new pastor was received with thereverence, love and respect that every tiue Catholic mani-fests towtird a priest. Father Loughrans address was sub-stantially as follows:. REV. THOMAS J. LOUGHRAN,Second Pastor of the Sacred Heart Parish. THE SACRED HEART PARISH. 159 My Dear People—In the strange vicissitudes oflife there is none wiiich appears more incongiiions to usthan the fact that the Divinity that shapes our endssometimes makes wliat is an occasion of sorrow to one pei-son an event in the life of some other person that bringswith it such unalloyed happiness that he cannot Iefrainfrom rejoicing with an exceeding great joy. That your former good pastor should be colled u]jon,in deference to duty, to sever the ties which bound him soclosely to his beloved flock, was inderd an occasion of sor-row both to himself and to you ; but I will frankly say thatit was to me an occasion of unbounded joy. If he werecalled away by death—or were degiaded
