The papers date from the 1790s through 1860. This handwritten, single page document is an account of taxes owed by John Rouzee's estate to the Sheriff of Essex County for the year 1835. The taxable property is listed as "34 slaves 10 horses and 1 Coachie," as well as four hundred and ninety-seven (497) acres of land, twenty-eight (28) county and poor levies at one (1) dollar and twenty-nine (29) cents each, and six hundred and thirty-nine (639) acres of land from the Richard Rouzee Estate. The total amount due was sixty-one (61) dollars and ten (10) cents. The payment was received from Robert P. Waring on October 15, 1835. The document is signed at the bottom right by Robert Hill. On the reverse is written "Rouzee John's ; along with notes about the amount and date paid. The date is written in graphite, the rest of the text on both front and back is written in black ink.
