Engineering and Mechanic Arts. This department, in connection with those of Physics andDraughting, is intended to give a good preparation to those studentswho are expecting to become either Civil or Mechanical Engineers,or to engage in any of the several specialties of engineering practice. The studies and exercises are so arranged that the graduates willbe prepared to become immediately useful in the office, works, orfield, in subordinate positions, and, after a fair amount of such prac-tice, to design and take charge of important works. The location of the College is most favorable for residence andstudy, combining the quiet of the country with ready access to Phila-. The department is well provided with the necessary field instru-ments, transits, levels, plane-table, etc., and each student is madefamiliar with their use and management by practical exercises in thefield and draughting-room, carefully planned to illustrate the actualpractice of the engineer.
