Brunel at 'Great Eastern' launch attempt, 3 November 1857, at the docks at Milwall, London, UK. British civil engineer and ship designer Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859) is at centre right, surrounded by those who had invested millions of pounds in the syndicate formed to fund the building of the ship. At nearly twenty-two thousand tons, this was the largest ship ever built at the time. British photographer Robert Howlett (1831-1858) was commissioned by 'The Illustrated Times' to document the construction and launch, and took this photograph just before the attempted launch. The ship failed to move down the launching ramp, and steam winch handles spun out of control and killed two crew members. It was several more months before the ship was successfully launched.
