Ingratitude

The engraving is of a painting by Lemuel E Wilmarth (1835-1918) an American artist who started as a watchmaker and trained in Germany and at the Écoles des Beaux Arts in Paris under Gérôme. He became the first full time professor at the National Academy of Design in New York but became disenchanted with it and joined the Art Students League. He specialized in painting portrait groups and everyday scenes. Ingratitude shows the ingratitude of the mother of a litter of pups who eats her owner’s dinner while he tends to her offspring.
