Indian sepoy (soldier) of the Bengal Army in helmet, jacket with epaulettes, shorts and slippers, carrying a musket and sword. Handcoloured woodcut by Vermorcken after an illustration by H. Hendrickx from Auguste Wahlen's "Moeurs, Usages et Costumes de tous les Peuples du Monde," Librairie Historique-Artistique, Brussels, 1845. Wahlen was the pseudonym of Jean-Francois-Nicolas Loumyer (1801-1875), a writer and archivist with the Heraldic Department of Belgium. Illustration adapted from George Fitzclarence's "Journal of a Route across India," 1819.
