Colourful Celebration of Bangali new Year"Pohela Boishakh-1426"


Bengali New Year, also known as 'Pohela Boishakh' is the first day in the Bengali calendar. Pohela means ‘first’ and Boishakh is first month of the Bengali calendar. It is celebrated on 14 April as a national holiday in Bangladesh and on 14 or 15 April in the Indian states of West Bengal, Tripura and parts of Assam and Odisha by people of Bengali heritage, irrespective of their religious faith. Bengalis all over the world celebrate Pohela Boishakh with amid great festivities, with traditional fairs, cultural functions, foods and new clothes. The first day of the Bangla calendar indeed is a big occasion in the life of every Bengali. It is a day of cheerful celebrations with great pride and enthusiasm. The Bangla Shon (BS), a solar calendar, was introduced by Mughal Emperor Akbar from 1556 AD to facilitate tax collection. Akbar had the Bangla New Year coincide with the end of spring harvesting season in Bengal. Bangladesh adopted a revised version of the calendar, to accommodate leap years, in 1996 with the first day of the year, Pohela Boishakh, fixed on April 14
