Route of emperors and kings, the Steinerne Brücke or Stone Bridge, in Regensburg, Germany, which links the old Bavarian district of Stadtamhof with Regensburg’s Old Town. The structure, built in the early 1100s AD, is a marvel of medieval engineering and served as a model for the Charles Bridge in Prague. On the left of this image is the Salzstadel, a 1600s AD former salt warehouse, and in the centre is a pink-washed tower, the 1300s AD South Tower of the bridge, with a clock added in 1648.
Regensburg, Bavaria, Germany: ancient structures on the south bank of the Danube by the early 1100s AD Steinerne Brücke or Stone Bridge. On the left is the Salzstadel, a former salt warehouse built from 1616 to 1620, with its enormous five-storey roof. In the centre is the pink-washed 1300s AD South Tower of the Stone Bridge, with a clock added in 1648. The South Tower houses the Brückturm-Museum or Bridge Tower Museum, with displays regarding the bridge’s history, and is a gateway to Regensburg’s Old Town. In the Middle Ages, Regensburg was an important economic centre and required a permanent river crossing. The Steinerne Brücke was built between 1135 and 1146 AD and for nearly 800 years, until 1935, was the only bridge offering a reliable means of crossing the Danube in the city and wide surrounding area. The structure spans the river at a length of approximately 300 metres. There are 16 footings, upon which the barrel vaults of the bridge construction rest. This wonder of medieval engineering skill, which served as the model for Prague’s Charles Bridge, is closed to traffic today. Regensburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
