These verses describe the Roman empire,which succeeded the Greek and Macedon-ian, about the time of the Caesars, Julius,and Augustus, perhaps we may reckon about30 years before the christian era. Augus-tus Coesar, was emperor of Rome at the timeof Christs birth, and Tiberias Caesar at thetime of his crucifixion. It was strong like. xebuchadnezzars dream. 47 iron, and break in pieces and subdued allthings. The Romans in the former part oftheir prosperity, were remarkable for valor,hardiness, frugality, and poverty, of whichiron is a proper emblem. The two consulsby which they were long governed, and theeastern and western empires, into which theirdominions were ultimately divided, may bedenoted by the two legs and feet on whichthe image stood; and the ten toes intowhich the feet are divided, represented theten kingdoms into which the whole empirewas afterwards divided. But these thingswill be more fully illustrated in a subsequentpart of the book, where the same empire isrepresented as a beast with seven heads andten horns. 44 And in the days of these kings shall the God ofheaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroy-ed ; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people,but it sh
