Cholera control. 19th-century illustration of workers using a hosepipe to wash the streets round Covent Garden, London, UK. This improved the sanitation of the streets, removing horse manure and decaying and rotten detritus. Cholera, a bacterial infection of the intestines, was often fatal before modern treatments were developed. It spread in infected water supplies and killed millions in the 19th century. The bacterium causing the disease (Vibrio cholerae) was not identified until 1883. Artwork by French artist Henri Lanos (1859-1929), published in the British weekly illustrated newspaper 'The Graphic' on 1 September 1894.
