These distinguishedcorps comprise 1314 cavalry in three regiments, and6307 infantry in seven battalions. The officers ofthe regiments of Foot Guards hold higher armyrank than that they bear regimentaUy—that is,ensigns rank with lieutenants of other regiments,lieutenants with captains, captains with lieutenant-colonels ; and on exchanging into the line, they arethus enabled to exchange into the higher positions,a circumstance which often places officers of com-paratively short service over veterans of the line,and causes, perhaps, more heartburning than anyother anomaly among our regidations.
