Entered UnionCollege, 1818. Admitted to the bar, 1822. Elected aState Senator, 1831. Defeated for Governor, Governor, 183S ; re-elected 1840, declining athird term, 1812. Canvassed the Stale for Henry Clay1S44, but devoted the most of the period 1843-49 to hisextensive legal practice. Elected U. S. Senator, 1849 ;re-elected ,5. Appointed Secretary of Stale by Pres-ident Lincoln, immediately after his flst retained the important post tbioughout the the time of Mr. Lincolns ar-sassmation. Mr. Sewardwas brntally assaulted.
