Time-exposure of polar star trails. The Pole Star, Polaris, is the short bright trail just off centre. The circular formation of the star trails is a result of the Earth's revolution in relation to the fixed stars. The different colours of the star trails results from the different intrinsic colours of the stars themselves, ranging from blue-white, through white and yellow, to orange. The photograph was taken from the Roque de los Muchachos observatory on La Palma in the Canary Islands.
