His mother,nee Catherine Crause, was ofGerman parentage, and diedwhile he was an infant. was a learned and skillfulphysician, of classical attain-ments and proficient in severalmodern languages, who, afterserving throughout the Revolu-tionary War as a Surgeon, settled on the land grantedhim by the Government, and resided there a re-spected and leading influence in his section until hisdeath, at the ripe age of 92 years. The subject of this sketch, impelled by the spiritof Western adventure then pervading everywhere,left his home, Nov. 2, 1818, and passed the succeed-ing winter in Cincinnati, Ohio. The following sum-mer he pushed on to Illinois, landing at Shawneetovvn,and spent the fall and following winter in CalhounCounty. In 1820, in company with Willar
