This theory, knownas Uniformitarianism, or the quietistic theory, has held the scienceo£ geology in bondage for over half a century, and only a few ofthe more advanced thinkers yet realize that it is childishly inade-quate to explain the awful vicissitudes recorded in the rocks. Hedied in 1875, and was buried in Westminster Abbey. Had it notbeen for such men as Cuvier and Lyell, the modern teachers ofEvolution, Darwin, Spencer, and Huxley, would never have beenlistened to for half an hour. 76 GODS TWO BOOKS.
