Some of these roads follow the course of old ones that had been graded in a desultory way by preced- ing Spanish and Cuban administrations; but Mclrvin Finca, Guanabacoa, Havana Province, aria del Rosario. for the most part they replace cart-cut tracks through the thickets that were barely passable in dry weather and entirely useless during the long rainy season. They bring easy communication to the fertile acres of the entire country, much of which has been hitherto completely isolated. They open up the arteries of trade to sections that for hundreds of years have stagnated for a lack of ability to get their produce to market.
