In May, Porters menwere transferred to the new provisional FifthArmy Corps. The future additions to the corpswere chiefly from the Eighth and Twenty-secondcorps. The corps fought in the battles of theArmy of the Potomac and two divisions were sentto the assistance of the Army of Virginia at Sec-ond Bull Hun and Chantilly. On March 24,1N()4. it was merged in the Second Corps. Itscommanders were Brigadier-Generals S. and George Stoneman,
