Rambles in the Pyrenees and the adjacent districts, Gascony, Pays de Foix [and] Roussillon . us narthex proper, which supports the gallery above, consists of six quadripartite vaults, each about six feetsquare, resting upon colonnettes of red Pyrenean western range has a pier at each end and two pairsof colonnettes within, which support three twin un-moulded arches with a sinking between them. Thesame arrangement is used in the two arches on thenorth side ; those on the south side are walled rest of the colonnettes are single. The main archesare all semicircular and unmoulded, the voussoirsbeing long and shallow, as at Elne. The cross-ribsare faced with a roll 6 inches across, and are separatefrom the filling in, and without any common keystoneat the juncture (again resembling Moissac in thisparticular), thus having no constructional value, beingapparently the work of an architect who desired tofollow the new fashion, but did not understand bases have claws, and the lower torus is muchlarger than the upper. On the caps are figures of. THE NARTHEX, PRIORY OF SERRABONA. 248 THE PRIORY OF SERRABONA monsters face to face, of lionesses with curled manesand tails terminating in a flower-knop, etc., both inarrangement and detail betraying Oriental eyes, nostrils, and corners of the lips are workedwith the drill, and lead is inserted in the iris, a treat-ment also found at Elne and in other places in Rous-sillon. This narthex is one of the principal curiositiesof Serrabona, The east wall of the narthex is pierced by the westdoor of the church ; on each side of it is a round-archedarcade of two arches, unmoulded except for a hollowornamented with the same four-pointed rosettes alreadynoticed on the abaci. The nave has a pointed barrel-vault without supporting arches. In the south waUare two narrow-pointed windows, high up, and onesquare-headed ; on the north side is a later inside the west wall is a niche
