Or seed may be sown under glass four weeks sooner, and the young seedlings transplanted to open ground, to give an extra early crop. Give thorough and clean cultivation, and thin the plants to stand 3 to 4 inches apart in the rows. For succession sow at internals untU middle of July. For the earliest sowings a light dressing of nitrate of soda, say 100 pounds per acre, will sometimes work wonders. Detroit Dark Red. (See cut.) A choice variety of early turnip Beet. The tops make an upright growth, thus allowing of planting in close rows, a valuable feature where space is Umited. The Beet is somewhat globe shape, skin blood red and flesh rich red, zoned with a darker shade. The Beets are sweet when cooked, and it is a splendid variety for canning. Pkt., 10 cts.; oz., 15 cts.; \ lb., 40 cts.; lb., Early Eclipse. Perfectly smooth and round; skin and flesh red. It is one of the first to be ready for the ^able. Pkt., 10 cts.; oz., 15 cts.; \ lb., 30 cts.; lb., Early Blood Turnip. A fine selection, early, good for summer and autumn use. The Beet is round, with flat top. Pkt., 10 cts.; 15 cts.; I lb., 30 cts.; lb., $ Early Bassano. An old-time and excellent second early variety having large leaf top, which may be used as greens.
