Blood clotting. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of human red blood cells (erythrocytes, red) and platelets (thrombocyte, white) forming a blood clot. Clots are formed in response to cardiovascular disease or injuries to blood vessels. Platelets secrete chemicals that promote the accumulation of fibrin (not seen) and other blood components required for clot formation. Magnification: x7000 when printed 10cm wide.
