Louis d'Orleans (1845-1866), Prince of Conde. Louis d'Orleans is best known for being the first member of a royal family to visit Australia. He and his family had gone into exile following the French Revolution of 1848. Aged 20, his father arranged for him to go on a world tour to Egypt, Ceylon, Australia, New Zealand, Java, China, Japan and India. Louis d'Orleans was fascinated by the exotic nature of Australia. However, the tour was cut short when the young prince fell ill and died in Sydney, Australia, on 24 May 1866. His funeral in Sydney was attended by some 2000 people, with his remains and heart returned to England and eventually interred in the family burial chapels in France. Artwork published in 1868.
