That part of the South Mountain still retains thelocal name of Schwoben Berg, Anglice, SuabianHill, where Shaeffers wife, Anna Engle, first sawthe advantages of settling on the fair and fertile landsthat lay near the foot of the mountain. She inducedher husband to remove from the bleak and unpropi-tious mountain-side to the inviting plain that wasstretched out beneath them. Whereupon Shaefferobtained possession by purchase from the heirs ofMartin Thomas of all the lands now covered by thetown, as well as a considerable part of those lying inits immediate vicinity. It was laid out by him in. SHAEFFERS OLD HOUSE, 1735-3S. 1744 after a plan which has not since been materiallydeviated from. In what was designed to be themarket-place, in the centre of the town, he left a largeopen square, in which, after the fashion of the oldcountry, fountains (briinnen) were to be erected. Infurtherance of this plan, he and his wife, in 1753,deeded to George Ulrich and Frederick Albright,trustees, etc., a certain tract of land, together witha leading spring on the same, for the use of the in-habitants of Market Street, etc. This leadingspring lies about four hundred yards south of thetown, and its waters are led in through iron of the fountains has been erected at the northernend of the square, and the other has been placed inMarket Street at some distance from the southernend.
