Burr on a silver birch (Betula pendula)

Silver birch (Betula pendula) with a large burr, or burl, on the trunk. A burl is a growth on a tree formed from unsprouted bud tissue. When a tree is stressed by injury, virus or fungus it may produce an enlarged convoluted growth covered in bark. Some of these are highly prized by sculptors, wood turners and furniture manufacturers who use the swirling patterns in their designs. Photographed in May, in Warwickshire UK.
