Aeroplane of Baron von Richthofen, illustration. Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen (1892-1918) was one of the best known German fighter pilots during the First World War. By 1918, he was regarded as a national hero in Germany. The bright red paint on one of his aeroplanes earned him the name of Red Baron. Richthofen was shot down in a Fokker Triplane (shown here) and killed near Amiens on 21 April 1918. The armament included two Spandau machine guns.
