The Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity mission (SMOS) is the second Earth Explorer Opportunity mission to be developed as part of the European Space Agency's (ESA) Living Planet Programme and is designed to provide global maps of soil moisture and ocean salinity. Soil moisture data are required for hydrological studies and data on ocean salinity are vital for improving understanding of ocean circulation patterns. Together, these data contribute to furthering knowledge of the Earth's water cycle and help to improve climate, weather and extreme-event forecasting. The SMOS satellite was launched in November 2009.
