City of the Dead At Greyfriars, View Showing Historic Mausoleums and Covenantors Prison: Greyfriars Church Yard, Edinburgh, Scotland.

Greyfriars Kirkyard in the historic old Edinburgh, dating back to the 1560’s. Its name is taken from the original Franciscan site which was dissolved in 1559. The ‘City of the Dead’ is a row of enclosed vaults on the edge of the graveyard. They are constructed with stone walls with iron railings and gates which can be locked. These were a deterrent to the eighteenth century grave robbers. The Covenanters’ Prison is also here. Approximately 1200 prisoners were kept here in brutal conditions following a failed anti-government revolution in 1679.
