In New South Wales there were 49 candidates,including Cardinal Moran (the Roman Catholic Arch-bishop of Sydney), 10 Labour members, and a FROM COLONY TO COMMONWEALTH. 35 bunch of five Prudent Federalists. Each voter had lovotes, and 148,000 voted out of a total of 264,000 on theroll. The candidates selected were :— Mr. Edmund Barton, ; Hon. G. H. (Premier); Hon. j7 H. Carruthers, (Minister for Lands); Mr. W. McMillan (ex-Treasurer) ; Mr. W. J. Lyne, (Leader of Op-position) ; Hon. J. Brunker, (Chief Secretarv) ;Hon. R. E. OConnor, , ; Hon. Sir J. VISCOUNT GORMANSTOX, , GOVERNOR, TASMANIA. Abbott, (Speaker) ; Mr. J. T. Walker ; R. Wise (ex-Attorney-General). The Prudent Federalists were out of it, as well asthe Labour Bunch, and the selection showed the<:ommonsense of the electorate. It was not until March12th, that Westralia selected her delegates, and themeeting took place on March 22nd, 1897, at Adelaide. Committees were appointed to draft a in 91, but when brought up, it followed that of 1891, 36 FROM COLONY TO COMMONWEALTH. with such modifications as the years of discussion hadshown to be necessary. It was fully discussed andamended, and on April 23rd the new Bill was adopted,and was remitted to the Legislatures of the variouscolonies. In September the Convention met again in Sydney,,with Queensland absent. There were 286 amendmentsto discuss, which had been proposed by the variousParli
