False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a human lymphocyte cell undergoing a mitotic cell division (ie where 2 daughter cells with equal & identical chromosomes are produced by cytoplasmic cleavage of the parent cell). The cell is in late metaphase stage; the nuclear envelope has disappeared, & chromosomes (red) have arranged themselves at equator of spindle (centre of cell). The mitotic spindle (not visible - essentially the framework on which division takes place) is formed during prophase by the migration of 2 pairs of centrioles to opposite poles of cell that remain joined by microtubules.
