Effects of sunlight on plant growth. The plant on the left was left to grow in sunlight for three weeks, while an identical plant on the right was put in complete darkness for the same period of time. The plant in the sun remained compact and green, while the one in the dark grew in a more elongated fashion, with blanching and browning at the tips, and leaves dying and falling off. Sunlight is needed for plants to sustain themselves, providing the energy for photosynthesis.
