A little farther on we recognize at a glance the celebrated Victoria Bridge, oneof the greatest, if not the greatest engineering feat of the age, connect-ing the Grand Trunk Railway with the Island of Montreal and thesouth shore of the St. Lawrence. It is built of iron on the tubularprinciple. There are two long abutments and twenty-four piers ofsolid masonry. The length of the bridge is two miles. The tubethrough which the railway track is laid is twenty-two feet high andsixteen wide. The total cost of the structure was $6,300,000. Itis the creation of the same genius that spanned the Menai Straits,Robert Stephenson and A. M. Ross having been the engineers whoplanned this great work.
